Information on how lab results are processed, patient and provider notifications, and the CMPA requirements for follow-up.

Updated over a week ago

Once a lab or diagnostic imaging requisition is issued on Maple, the patient will download the form, enter any required information and bring it to a clinic of their choice. Our requisitions list Maple's contact information.

Results are sent from the clinic directly to Maple.

Once received, the results are reviewed by our Clinical Care Team, who will upload the results to the patient’s profile and notify them (letting them know whether or not they require follow-up). If the result is critical or requires more urgent follow-up, our team will call the patient. Patients can request a second consultation on Maple to review results or take them to their family doctor to discuss further.

You can view past lab results for any patients you treat on Maple (whether you were the issuing provider or not). See our Viewing lab results article for more information.

You can also opt to receive an automated daily notification of all results, including whether our team flagged results for follow-up, by enabling this in settings – please see Incoming lab result notifications article for details.

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) lab follow-up requirements

The CMPA requirements for follow-up on lab tests states:

“When ordering a test, physicians or NPs must be satisfied that they have a system in place to reasonably ensure the results are received and communicated to patients in a timely manner. It is important to have a policy for the follow-up of test results in a medical practice. A reliable follow-up system includes redundancy of defenses between steps: if safeguards at any one step fail, those in another can compensate for the lapse.”

At Maple, our system tracks which physician ordered each test (despite whose name is stamped on the requisition) and communications with patients on your behalf – ultimately, you are responsible for all results for tests you order using Maple’s application.
