I can't add a lab requisition

Lab requisitions are not available for all patients.

Updated over a week ago

If you don’t see the option to add a lab requisition, it’s likely that either:

  • They are not enabled for this location

  • They are on a public provincial partnership but not located in the province they have coverage for

Lab requisition availability is based on the province the patient is currently located in. Lab requisitions are not available in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Northwest Territories. Diagnostic imaging requisitions are not available in Manitoba, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon.

If the user is on a public provincial partnership, check to make sure that their current location is within their covered province. If the patient is located out of province, requisitions will be automatically disabled (they would be unable to use the requisition outside of their province, so the system prevents this from happening). To check a patient’s location, click on their name at the top of the consultation chat.

Can I tell if requisitions are enabled before I accept the consultation?

Most consultation requests will have a “Requisitions Enabled” note at the top of the screen, but this does not guarantee lab requisitions will be available. It may be indicating that paramedical referrals are available, as these are issued through the requisitions feature.

If lab requisitions do not appear as available once a consultation has begun, the system is most likely working as intended, and lab requisitions are not enabled for that consultation. If ever unsure, please contact our Customer Support team at [email protected], or by starting an in-app chat, and our team is happy to help clarify the situation.

You can see if lab requisitions are enabled during an active consultation by checking to see if Requisitions is an option in the menu on the top-right. If requisitions are not displaying, it’s possible it might have to do with the patient’s location at the time of consultation. Ensure that:

  • They are located in a province where requisitions are enabled

  • If they are requesting a publically-covered consultation, they are currently located in that province

Requisitions are not enabled — can I issue a lab requisition anyways?

OHIP or VirtualCareNS consultations

For patients with OHIP or VirtualCareNS coverage, patients must be located in the province at the time of the consult in order for it to be eligible for public billing. Lab requisitions cannot be issued for these consultations due to location issues, as these consultations should only take place when the patient is located in their home province.

Other publicly covered consultations

For all other provinces, if the provincial location is displaying in error, or if you’re unsure if requisitions are possible, you can reach out to the Customer Support team to potentially have the patient’s location manually changed. If the issue is due to the patient’s provincial location, the patient’s location may be able to be manually adjusted; however, the patient will not be able to use it until they return to their home province.

For all other consultations

You can choose to order lab work outside of our regular process at your discretion. In these cases, our team does not have access to upload results since the requisition won’t be generated in our system.

Please note that you will be responsible for managing the results and all communications with the patient, including posting the results back to the patient profile and contacting them promptly. Please include your office address and contact information on the form so labs can follow up with you directly with the results.
