Overview: Ordering Labs and DI

Updated over a week ago

Availability of Requisitions

Lab and diagnostic imaging (DI) requisitions are not available for every patient on Maple. Availability depends on the province of residence and the type of visit.

If requisitions are not enabled:

  • A notification will appear in the Triage Room before you start the consultation.

  • The “Requisitions” option will be unavailable in the consultation’s hamburger menu.

How to Order a Requisition (When Available)

  1. Confirm that a requisition is clinically appropriate during your consultation.

  2. From the consultation window, open the hamburger menu and select ‘Requisitions’ (if available).

    • Select the appropriate lab or diagnostic imaging tests.

    • Include any relevant clinical details.

  3. Send the requisition to the patient:

    • Advise them to download, print, and present it at a local lab or diagnostic imaging centre, as appropriate.

    • Our requisitions include Maple’s contact information so results are sent directly back to us.

    • Results typically take up to 10 business days to arrive. Feel free to share this timing expectation with your patients when issuing the requisition.

How Patients Are Notified of Their Results

Per regulatory guidelines, clinicians must ensure there’s a system in place to receive results and communicate them to patients in a timely manner. When using Maple’s requisition workflow, clinicians delegate this responsibility to Maple’s Care Delivery Operations team including third-party registered nurses (RNs) and physicians ("CDO Contractors") provided that the required clinical context is entered with the requisition.

Here’s how it works:

  • Once results are received by Maple, they’re sent to our CDO Contractors for review.

  • CDO Contractors do not have access to the original consultation notes in order to protect patient confidentiality. They rely solely on the clinical context provided by you in the requisition form to review the results and assign a follow-up status (e.g., normal, urgent, requires follow-up, critical, etc.). Click here to view the full list of patient-facing follow-up messages. Important: This context is critical to ensuring results are accurately interpreted and appropriate next steps are communicated.

  • Results are uploaded to the patient’s profile by Maple's Admin team.
