OHIP-covered general practitioner consultations
Updated over a week ago

Residents of Ontario have access to covered general practitioner consultations. The OHIP GP service is available 24/7. Patients who are not eligible for OHIP coverage can still see a provider through this specialty.

To be eligible for reimbursement by OHIP:

  • Patient must have a valid OHIP health card number (HCN)

  • Consultations must be completed by audio or video

  • Both the patient and provider must be located in Ontario at the time of the visit (as described in the Bulletin 221203 — Virtual Health Care in Ontario available here)

OHIP GP billing and payment

These consultations must include a billing and diagnostic code. You are responsible for adding these to the consultation (see Adding a billing code to a consultation for instructions). Maple will top-up the OHIP payment for these consultations. Payment depends on the billing code entered, and the time of the consultation. Consultation time will fall into one of these categories:

  • Weekday: 7 am - 11:59 pm

  • Overnight: 12 am - 6:59 am

  • Weekend/holiday

The table below provides billing code and payment details.

The billing code options displayed depend on the patient's OHIP coverage eligibility. If a patient did not have a verified health card at the time of the consultation, only the 999 Visits Not OHIP compliant billing code option will be available.

Please only verify a patient's health card in our system once you have seen a copy and can confirm the name, number, and expiry date match the patient's profile.

Memberships and OHIP GP

Maple memberships offer account holders and their family members access to ongoing healthcare services, including OHIP-covered GP visits, exclusive in-app content, and more.

All users in Ontario have access to the OHIP GP. Non-subscribers must have an external medical professional complete a patient intake form before they can request a consultation.

Rejecting consultations

Rejections are not available for these consultations. If you get a request you feel is inappropriate for online care, please accept it and chat with the patient to answer their questions and direct them to in-person care. You will be paid for these visits even if no treatment is provided. Please see the Maple Policy on Corporate Consultations for details.
