The "Emergency" button is intended for situations where the most appropriate action is for the patient to call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department immediately.
When you click this button, the patient receives the following notification:
"This may be a medical emergency. Based on the details you provided, the provider has indicated that you should call 911 or proceed to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately."
Important: Only use the "Emergency" button for genuine emergencies.
If You Determine an Emergency During a Visit
If you accept a patient's request and you determine that they are experiencing an emergency:
Advise the patient to call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department immediately.
Offer to write a note for the patient to take to the ER, if appropriate.
What to Do for Non-Emergency but Inappropriate Virtual Care Requests
Do not use the "Emergency" button to quickly bypass patient requests.
We understand that when reviewing some requests, you may find them unsuitable for virtual care but not emergencies. In these cases, if your only options are "Accept" or "Emergency," you can:
Accept the request.
Speak with the patient to assess their condition or symptoms.
Gather key information, including medical history and current concerns.
Provide clear next steps:
If the condition cannot be safely addressed on Maple, guide the patient on appropriate in-person care.
If the condition can be managed virtually, proceed with a full consultation.
Complete the visit "With charge" to receive full payment.
Note: Typically, consultations last no more than 10 to 15 minutes on Maple.
