How to issue a specialist referral and how Maple manages them after the consultation.

Updated over a week ago

Specialist referrals are currently only available to patients on select corporate partnerships. You can see when this feature is available in the provider drop-down menu within the consult, as well as on the consultation request page.

When you request a referral for a patient, this process is initiated and tracked within the Maple system. Our Referrals team organizes the referral and oversees the process from start to finish. There is no responsibility placed on the patient to send or bring the letter to a specialist clinic to request a visit.

Once the specialist has accepted the referral, the specialist’s office is responsible for reaching out to the patient by phone or email to schedule an appointment. This process can take some time (sometimes weeks or months). We appreciate your help in communicating this expectation to the patient.

Note: Our system is not designed to support urgent specialist referrals. Any urgent referrals should be directed to the ER.

When issuing a referral, please always provide clear and sufficient information on:

  • Why the patient needs to be seen

  • The urgency of the request

  • Any relevant details regarding the medical history or clinical presentation
